  • Sony PS3 hacker George ‘GeoHot’ Hotz ‘works for Facebook’ (Digital Trends)

Posted on June 27th, 2011 Tech Nerd No comments

    geohot-facebook-george-hotz

Just when you thought the stories were finished hackers lot in the evening, another twist comes in: George Hacker 'GeoHot "Hotz, who recently filed a lawsuit with Sony for publishing a PlayStation 3 online crack, now works for Facebook, according different sources. His exact position within the company is unclear, but may be on a development team spirit building task for the social network about rumored iPad.

The voice breaks Development Hotz "legitimate" product is the first to hackers jailbreak Joshua Hill (aka p0isixNinja), who said in a recent interview that he had been to Hotz. Hill reported Hotz challenged to jailbreak iPad Duel 2. (Both come from a background hack pirate-IOS). Hotz has refused, saying he wanted to stay out of the media after the debacle of Sony.

Techmeme, said he has noticed the Facebook page Hotz a message that says. "Facebook is really an incredible place to work … first hackathon more» Hotz reports published after June 17, but it is said to have worked with Facebook in May.

Hotz has become a bit of a "symbol for the hacker community. Hacktivist Anonymous group launched a distributed denial of service (DDoS) on Sony in April, as punishment for exposing Hotz.Coincidence or not, the DDoS attack came as both a monstrous violation of the Sony PlayStation, the network put the personal data of up to 100 million people worldwide at risk.

The hacks became the prologue of a campaign being conducted by Lulz security, who joined Sony in a variety of ways. The group later went on to attack everyone from PBS to the CIA. Coincidentally, tonight announced the dissolution LulzSec been, and never take another cyber attack on the pirate flag LulzSec again. There is no evidence so far that the company GeoHot has nothing to do with the sudden death of LulzSec.

  • E3 2011: Hands-on with Uncharted 3 multiplayer (Yahoo! News)

Posted on June 9th, 2011 Tech Nerd No comments

The Uncharted series by developer Naughty Dog has been a major system seller for Sony’s PlayStation 3. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune introduced us to Nathan Drake, an adventurer who has a knack for finding treasure, as well as plenty of danger. The sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves expanded on the series and brought it into an urban environment, and is still considered to be one of best PlayStation 3 games available. Now, with the third game in the franchise, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception on the horizon, expectations are higher than ever.

Uncharted 3 will include a rather large multiplayer offering, just as its predecessor did, and I had a chance to take it for a spin on the E3 show floor. The controls and overall feel of Uncharted 3‘s multiplayer appears to be largely unchanged from its predecessor. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as Uncharted 2‘s multiplayer modes were generally well-received, and helped to build a fanbase that the series hadn’t touched with the single-player-only focus of the original Uncharted title.

The game mode on offer pitted me and about 5 other players against a mixed team of human AI opponents. Our task was securing 3 pieces of treasure that randomly spawned in unpredictable locations. Picking up a treasure meant that 2-handed weapons like shotguns and assault rifles were no longer usable, and my character had to rely on one-handed weapons to fend off opposing players. Running was also hindered while carrying treasure, making me an easy target for anyone with a clear line of sight.

Turning a corner and coming face-to-face with an enemy meant one of two things, depending on if the enemy was a computer opponent or one being controlled by an opposing player. Human players reacted quickly, as you would expect, and I met my end at the hands of several of them repeatedly. However, if I was lucky enough to have stumbled across an artificial assailant, I would always come out on top. The decision to mix human and computer enemies together creates a stark contrast between the two, and made me feel a bit less responsible for the match outcome. Hopefully the sloppy multiplayer AI can be straightened out a bit before the game’s release.

The game’s visuals are right on par with the previous release, and the single multiplayer map that was available looked just as good as anything in Uncharted 2. The character models and the environment were very detailed, and several of the random items in the environment were destructible. The lighting was especially impressive, and actually saved my life several times by giving away the positon of enemies that were casting shadows.

Uncharted 3 will undoubtedly be another solid title from Naughty Dog, and the multiplayer demo that Sony was showing off here at E3 should be an indication that multiplayer fans also have a great deal to look forward to. Uncharted 3 debuts November 1, 2011, and is a PlayStation 3 exclusive.

  • The Best News at E3: Microsoft to Provide Live Television on XBox 360 (ContributorNetwork)

Posted on June 9th, 2011 Tech Nerd No comments

COMMENT | I admit it: I am a Playstation loyalist and have yet to support the Xbox 360 drink-Kool.

Developments on Wednesday at E3, however, can finally forced me to change my attitude.

While Sony is busy figuring out how to buy back customers for the fiasco that occurred when the PSN system was hacked in April, has been busy Xbox substance to add to the already strong gaming experience. From a business perspective, every game system sold them something else. PlayStation 3 is advertised as a one-stop shop for entertainment to Blue-ray playback to record. Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been exhibited in particular as a gaming machine first, which is rich in something when it comes to the core of its purpose, which is the best gaming experience possible in the consoles.

Wednesday at E3, Microsoft has a leap forward in cementing itself as a market leader on both ends of the spectrum with the announcement of his intention to live TV has to offer earlier this fall.

How many E3 announcements are only small pieces of information available, but it is by design that leave much to speculation. This is definitely the fun part of a major announcement at the conference. The most important piece of information is that AT & T has confirmed that U-Verse to be on the Xbox 360 available. New and existing subscribers to a kit for $ 99.00 beginning 15th October order. When a U-Verse subscriber, the prospect of the integration of my DVR with my game system, exciting and something I can always be the final blow needed in the system.

I hate clutter, and the more I can consolidate my entertainment in one device, the better. The possibility of using a home console as a set-top box, in my opinion, is the most exciting announcement at E3 this year. Best of unprecedented steps forward, as is any business unit of competition and the strength to face each other. This bodes well for the consumer, such as better technology is introduced more quickly.

What will be interesting to see what response will be the announcement of Sony. Undoubtedly, the company is already brainstorming on how to provide a similar service. You can work in favor of Sony for the Xbox to be the guinea pig here, and thus improve the shortcomings of Microsoft is running in the fall.

Obviously there will be many questions: the first is the substantial form of the visual experience will be, and if it is not a substitute for the truly capable receiver.Although all these questions and many more, the news is certainly welcome, and a very positive step in the gaming industry.

  • Sony restoring game network in Asia; to testify in U.S. (Reuters)

Posted on May 27th, 2011 Tech Nerd No comments

Man looks at Sony Corp's products at an electronics store in Tokyo

TOKYO/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Sony Corp said it will start restoring its PlayStation videogame network in Japan and elsewhere in Asia on Saturday, more than a month after a massive security breach leaked personal details on tens of millions of accounts.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment giant also said on Friday it plans to testify before U.S. lawmakers at a hearing on data security in Washington on June 2 to address what is thought to be the biggest Internet security breach in history.

The company has been under fire since hackers accessed personal information on 77 million PlayStation Network and Qriocity accounts — 90 percent of which are in North America and Europe — and may have stolen credit card information.

Video game fans and security experts alike have criticized Sony for its handling of the incident, which sparked lawsuits and cast a shadow over its plans to combine the strengths of its content and hardware products via online services.

The company apologized to customers for the outage and said a range of new security measures had been introduced. These included a better early warning system that could alert the company about breaches.

In a new letter sent to U.S. lawmakers late on Thursday evening, Sony said it added more firewalls and introduced policy changes and thorough testing of its systems. But Sony warned the new measures might not be enough to fully secure its networks.

"No security system is absolutely foolproof, and changing conditions in the future can make a currently secure environment less secure," Sony said in the letter signed by Kazuo Hirai, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment, the company's games unit.

Japan's trade ministry ordered the games unit on Friday to adopt measures to improve the management and security of personal information, following the data breach.

"Considering the content and volume of information leaked, it is an extremely grave incident, and it is truly regrettable that it occurred and took a considerable time to notify users and the ministry," the ministry said in a statement.

Sony has said it will offer a new identity protection service to customers in Asia.

    COUNTING COSTS

On Thursday, Sony said it was keeping to its target of restoring all PlayStation Network services by the end of May, with any delay beyond that not likely to be more than a few days.

It has said it expects the hacking to drag down operating profit by 14 billion yen ($172 million) in the current financial year, including costs for boosting security measures.

Sony shares fell 3.2 percent ahead of the announcement on the restart, with analysts concerned Sony's forecast for a $975 million net profit this business year may not meet expectations. Its ADR shares in the United States were down a little over 1 percent in early afternoon trading.

Some users have said the prolonged outage prompted them to switch to rival Microsoft Corp's Xbox Live games service.

The attack on Sony is the highest-profile of a series that have affected large corporations recently, fueling doubts about the security of cloud computing services.

Sony discovered unusual activity on its PlayStation Network, which enables games console owners to download games, chat with friends and pit their skills against rivals, on April 19.

It shut down the network and its Qriocity online music and movie service, frustrating many users, but waited almost a week before alerting users to the extent of the security leak.

The company later found out a separate online games service had also been penetrated, allowing access to another 25 million user accounts.
